Only the landlord/owner of a property can buy the buildings insurance, which offers protection against damage to the physical structure of the property. If you are a tenant, this insurance is not applicable to you and you should opt for the Contents and Personal Belongings Cover. Both buildings and contents insurance can be bought separately or can be combined into one policy.
This covers loss, theft or accidental damage to your personal possessions while you are away from your home or on holiday. These items could include cameras, watches, sunglasses, jewelry and so forth.
Your building should be insured for its rebuilding cost, including the cost of professional fees and site clearance.
Your contents should be based on the current replacement costs ‘as new’ at today’s prices. It’s worth building an inventory of your contents from room to room and recording their value to come up with your total.
The Average Clause applies to our Home Insurance policies. This means that if the sum insured at the time of the loss is less than the insurable value of the buildings or contents the amount claimed under the policy will be reduced proportionately.
An excess is the first amount of any loss that you are responsible for paying in the event of making a claim. This amount is deducted from the total claim settlement figure.
Insurers have a single-article-limit clause in respect of contents and personal belongings. Generally, the single article limit pertaining to contents is AED 40,000 and that of personal belongings is AED 10,000. You should list all those contents and personal belongings costing more than the single article limits separately.
